Chapter Fifteen

We land in Smythe’s apartment, another round of tingles spreading through my body as I step out of the portal. Despite the tingles, I like avoiding the landing room. It’s sneaky and underhanded.

Maybe that’s a problem.

Nah. To catch a demon we need the occasional sneakiness.

The portal snaps closed. Smythe paces to the kitchen, his black shitkickers stomping the hell out of the carpet. So much for him agreeing we were correct in getting Zagan’s help.

“Water?” He holds up a glass.

I shrug. “Sure.”

Smythe fills the glasses from a filtered pitcher he grabs out of the fridge and passes them out to us. Once we sit, he starts talking.

“Eloise, you and T should scope out the building tomorrow. See if you can find the ghost. Or the demon. Gin and I will also look around the place.” He takes a sip of water, then points the glass at Eloise. “You wouldn’t happen to know why payments are coming into the Agency, would you?”

“Payments?” Little lines form around Eloise’s eyes.

“Why’s that so strange?” T asks. “They have money dripping off the ceilings. I’d think someone would be paying them.”

Eloise and Smythe stare at my twin as if he sprouted horns. Eloise shakes her head.

“No, payments should not be coming in to the Agency. The Agency gains its money from investments,” Eloise says.

“That’s what I thought too, until I did some investigating.” Smythe drums his fingers against his thigh. “Regular payments are coming in from a variety of different financial institutions. A little more digging showed the payments are from huge companies and their owners.” He mentions the name of a billionaire who owns one of the companies.

“That’s odd.”

“Yeah, that’s what I thought. I need to do some more digging but even if I discover who all the accounts belong to, the bigger question is why they are paying the Agency.”

“Hush money,” T says.

“That’s my thought.” Twins think alike. “Like a mob payoff. The Agency holds something over these companies and they’re paying them to keep it quiet.”

“Gin, the conspiracy theorist.” Smythe grins and shakes his head.

I raise my glass to him. “Maybe, but we’re talking about the Agency. This whole place is shadier than the middle of a forest in the dead of night.”

Eloise chokes out a chuckle. “I like that comparison. Aidan, I will leave the hacking and discovery to you. You are much better at those types of things than I. Tomorrow, T and I will hunt for the ghost.”

“And maybe hit the library for more info on ghost talkers?” T actually sounds excited about studying. Probably for the first time in his life.

He glares at me. Not the first time, sis.

I cover up my grin with a long sip.

“We can do that too.” Eloise pats his hand while looking at a yawning Smythe. “Sleepy, Aidan?”

Red tinges his cheeks. “Sorry. Yeah, I am. I’m ready for bed.”

A mental image drifts into my mind of exactly what he wants to do to and with me when we crawl into his bed. Heat warms my core, flushes my cheeks.
